Lost in Translation

I may be smiling in this photo, but I wasn’t feeling the happiest. I had just walked from Shinjuku station to find the Park Hyatt Hotel where Lost in Translation was filmed. It was 11.30 am and I thought ‘not too early for a Beer in the New York Grill’ (where many scenes are shot), however I arrived to find it closed until 5pm. The staff were very accommodating though and let me pop up to the bar and take a photo – great service recovery.
What struck me was the number of European tourists that I saw at the Hyatt – quite a different picture to that portrayed when Bob and Charlotte (Lost in Translation) stayed there. It makes me wonder whether Bob and Charlotte would have quite a different experience in Tokyo now? In a city which now has increasing opportunities for translation – would they feel so lost?
